PLUS ULTRA di Mafonso, fifteen years later | photo reportage 
After 15 years from its installation, the Sail/Indication PLUS ULTRA (m 12x5), created by Mafonso in December 2001 as reaction/thought after the terrorist attack in NYC on September 11th , will be exposed again in the square in front of the Royal Palace in Caserta, from June 25th (opening June 24th 8:00 pm) to September 11th at d2.0-box (dirartecontemporanea|2.0 gallery's booth). The walls will be set up with two innovative acrylic on cardboard applied on canvas (December 2001) and nine of the mixed techniques of the cycle " The blind statue " (1992), for the first time on exhibition and that, as Mafonso wrote in the Plus Ultra Volume (published by the Culture Department of Caserta, March 2003) were inspired by a poem by Pablo Neruda which "...has been with me for years and often, with wonder, I find myself chanting, like a liturgy during the strenuous working hours. A poem that speaks of Birth. That speaks of Fatigue. That speaks of Time. Time. Time."

"We live in a post-monumental era. We live in presentism. In the instantaneity. The time lag that generates seduction and admiration must be destroyed, the scene must be denied, there is no actual ceremony. There is no story, so there is no monument. Events are events without a scene, events in which the aesthetic is replaced by the physiological use of a simulated obscene. The obscene becomes routine, without offending anyone. The September 11th attack was an obscene event, the peak of obscenity. First, you create the simulation, the staging; then you find or make up something, a fact that justifies it. In response to that tragic event, there was an obvious massive production of images, images and still images, simulacra of other simulacra. Mafonso was one of those artists who refused to repeat, double, clone and remix simulacra with other simulacra.
In reaction to "9/11", Mafonso dedicated the monument the Sail. The Sail is above all a veil, a set of veils. Mafonso is a painter. Even when working in sculpture or mixed media, its style always recalls its peculiar pictorial style characterized by "spread a-plat" colour. The space of his art is two-dimensional. Since 1992 the artist created a series of untitled acrylics on cardboard + collage reflecting the theme of the "blind statue" and the "Sail" which gave birth to the Sail placed in the public area of Carlo III Square in front of the Royal Palace in Caserta, a few months after September 11, 2001. The Sail is not to be primarily considered as a public art installation, as its elements - although carefully studied - are mere functional instruments, not an integral part of the artwork. They only serve as a "painting" frame. The artistic quality of the work is represented by the painted cloths, or better, by the painting on the sail-shaped cloths.
That cloth, before being hoisted as sail, to "commemorate" in a post-monumental and anti-simulacral way the tragedy of "9/11" , was travelled, walked and crossed with the whole body by the artist as he drew and painted. So be it, then, that some 15 years later, we are allowed to see, hear, cross, touch the Sail cloth inside the D2.0-box , which , in this way, becomes the artist's workshop rather than just a gallery. The space becomes an empathetic and community habitat, drawing the users closer again using the experienced art, rather than the idol-work: here and now we find ourselves together to experience the Sail not so much as èrgon but as enèrgheria. The scene is there, the interaction is real; although only briefly, it is possible to endure the fatal power of the simulacrum, as long as you turn off your cameras."

A distanza di 15 anni dall'installazione nell'emiciclo antistante la Reggia di Caserta dal 25 di giugno ( opening 24 giugno h. 20:00 ) e sino all' 11 di Settembre al d2.0-box, il supporto fisico della dirartecontemporanea|2.0 gallery, sarà ri_esposta la Vela/Indice PLUS ULTRA ( m 12x5 ) che Mafonso realizzò nel dicembre 2001 quale reazione/riflessione a seguito del drammatico attentato alle torri gemelle in NYC.
Alle pareti saranno allestiti due inediti acrilici su cartone applicati su tela ( dicembre 2001 ) e nove delle tecniche miste del ciclo "La statua cieca" ( del 1992 ), per la prima volta in esposizione, che come ebbe a scrivere Mafonso nel volume Plus Ultra (edito dall'Assessorato alla Cultura della città di Caserta, Marzo 2003 ) gli furono ispirate da una Poesia di Pablo Neruda che " ... mi accompagna da anni e che spesso, con meraviglia, mi scopro a cantilenare, quasi fosse una liturgia, durante le faticose ore di lavoro nella solitudine del mio studio. Una poesia che parla di Nascita. Che parla di Fatica. Che parla di Tempo, Tempo, Tempo. "

"Viviamo in un'epoca post-monumentale. Viviamo nel presentismo. Nell'istantaneismo. Lo scarto temporale che crea seduzione, ammirazione, deve essere annientato, la scena va denegata, non c'è cerimonia effettiva. Non c'è storia, quindi non c'è monumento. Gli eventi sono eventi privi di scena, eventi in cui alla distanza estetica subentra la fruizione fisiologica dell'osceno simulato. L'osceno si fa routine, non scandalizza più nessuno. L'attentato dell' 11 settembre 2001 fu un evento osceno, l'acme dell'oscenità. Prima si crea la simulazione, la messinscena, poi ci si preoccupa di trovare, d'inventarsi un referente, un fatto che strumentalmente lo giustifichi. In risposta all'evento fatale c'è stata ovviamente una iperproduzione di immagini, di immagini di altre immagini, di simulacri di simulacri. Tra gli artisti che si svincolarono dalla mania di ripetere, raddoppiare, clonare, remixare simulacri con altri simulacri ci fu Mafonso.
Mafonso in reazione al "9/11" dedicò il post-monumento la Vela. La vela è anzitutto un telo, un' insieme di teli aggiuntati. Mafonso è un pittore. Anche quando si adopera nella scultura o in mixed media, il suo stile rievoca pur sempre ed essenzialmente quella sua peculiare maniera pittorica caratterizzata da campiture di colore steso a-plat. La spazialità della sua arte è bidimensionale. Dal '92 l'artista realizzava una serie Untitled di acrilici + collage su cartone che riprendevano il motivo della "statua cieca" e della "vela". Da essi si origina la Vela collocata pochi mesi dopo l'11 settembre 2001 nello spazio pubblico di piazza Carlo III antistante la Reggia di Caserta. La Vela non va intesa primariamente come un'installazione di public art, poichè in essa gli elementi installativi - seppur attentamente studiati - sono meri strumenti funzionali, non parte integrante dell'opera d'arte, assolvono alla funzione di cornice del "quadro". L'artisticità dell'opera consta del telo dipinto o meglio del dipinto su telo a forma di vela.
Quel telo, che prima di essere issato a vela, a "commemorazione" post-monumentale e anti-simulacrale dell'evento fatale "9/11" , veniva frequentato, percorso, attraversato con tutto il corpo dall'artista nell'atto del disegnare e del pittare. Ben venga, allora, che circa 15 anni dopo, ci sia concesso di ammirare, percepire, attraversare, toccare il telo della Vela all'interno del d2.0-Box , che , in tal modo, più che galleria si fa supplemento dell'officina dell'artista. Lo spazio si tramuta in habitat empatico e comunitario, riavvicinando i fruitori con il vissuto dell'operazione artistica, più che con l'idolo-opera: qui ed ora ci si ritrova assieme ad esperire al Vela non tanto in quanto èrgon bensì come enèrgheia. La scena c'è, l'interazione è effettiva; anche se solo per poco, si resiste al potere fatale del simulacro, a patto che si stacchino le camere. "
