At d2.0-box at the weekend of the contemporary in Naples and Campania promoted by the MADRE Museum of Naples. May, 12/14 and 26/28 - 2017.
The nine acrylics on straw paper, seven of them in video at the project-room of the Contemporary | 2.0 gallery and never exposed unless on this occasion of the weekend contemplated and set up by the MADRE Museum in Naples, following a Mafonso visit to Scampia – a suburb North of Naples - after reading about a tragic LOVE story: a local girl, formerly in relationship with a criminal boss of the neighborhood (later dead for an overdose of heroin), dared to fall in love with someone else, derogating from the perpetual mourn imposed her by the boy's family. Six months later the girl and her new lover were brutally murdered or better executed, because she "betrayed" her former love’s. (It was July 1992). Struck by this terrible story, Mafonso realized Periphery, persuaded that in the world’s suburbs there is not only degradation, social alienation, and exclusion, but also beauty, courage, and poetry, in the majority of people living there; but this is always or most of times ignored by media.

I nove acrilici su carta paglia , sette dei quali in video alla project-room della dirartecontemporanea|2.0 gallery e mai esposti se non in questa occasione del weekend del contemporaneo voluto ed istituito dal Museo MADRE di Napoli, fanno seguito ad una visita di Mafonso al Rione Scampia - periferia nord di Napoli - dopo aver letto di un AMORE punito perché una ragazza, ex- di un piccolo boss del rione (morto per una dose eccessiva di eroina ), aveva osato innamorarsi di un’altra persona derogando al lutto perenne impostole dai familiari del ragazzo. Sei mesi dopo la giovane ed il nuovo compagno venivano brutalmente uccisi o meglio giustiziati perché Ella aveva osato “tradire” la memoria dell’ex. ( Era Luglio del 1992). Colpito dalla terribile vicenda ed al rientro in studio (Settembre 1992) ll Maestro Campano li realizzò di getto dandogli il titolo “Periphery” convinto che nei sobborghi delle grandi città del mondo non ci fosse solo degrado, alienazione sociale, continua e reiterata esclusione bensì bellezza, coraggio e poesia di vivere nella maggioranza di chi, appunto, vi abita; ma questo non viene mai o quasi alla ribalta delle cronache.
